PARISH MISSION 2011
Sunday, May 8th at 7PM- Wednesday, May 11th 2011 at 7PM
With Fr. Hugh Burns, OP
GET REAL: RELIGION WITH TWO FEET ON THE GROUND: Christianity is about reality. It is where the reality of God and the reality of our lives meet. Our religion is not an escape from reality. It plunges us directly into the nitty gritty of everyday life armed with the secret to survival- the grace of a loving and merfiful God. In Jesus, God became one of us- human just as we are. He tasted our joys and felt our frustrations. He endured our pain and even our death. His life and words direct us through the maze of our confusion, trails, and challenges. His resurrection pours out the power we need not only to survive but to thrive and triumph. The Good News is that we CAN MAKE IT!
Sunday, May 8th at 7PM: Don't worry be happy: Christian Joy!
If you call yourself a Christian and are not happy, something is wrong. Being "holy" does not mean being somber and serious. The opposite is true. Having Jesus for a friend is the secret to Christian optimism, light heartedness and joy.
Monday, May 9th at 10AM: What are you afraid of? : Dealing with Life's Fears
From childhood we all the experience of fear. Some of these fears follow us into childhood. Sometimes we become paralyzed by irrational phobias. Jesus reminds us we are not alone.
Monday, May 9th at 7PM: See it Big- Keep it Simple: Poor in Spirit with Peace of Mind
With such an abundance of material blessings our society is shot through with deep disappointments and dissatification. The gospel demands simplicity of lifestyle and promises happiness.
Tuesday, May 10th at 10AM: Cool Off!: Coping with Anger
Anger is a disease of the soul. Resentment can overpower us. It cripples us with bitterness, cynicism, and negativitiy- In other words an "attitude." Let go and live!
Tuesday, May 10th at 7PM: Brought Near: A Sense of Belonging to the Church
The Church is a family- sometimes a dysfunctional one but a family nonetheless. Jesus has given us a new identity, despite our differences and failings. There are no strangers, we are children of God and sisters and brothers to each other. The Church is home- a safe place in the midst of a hostile world- or it should be!
Wednesday, May 11th at 10AM: Lighten Up!- A Christian Sense of Humor
Humans are the only creatures that can laugh. It is God's gift sown deep into our nature to help us deal with life's absurdities. We begin by laughing at ourselves.
Wednesday, May 11th at 7PM: Blessed Among Women: Mary Tender and Tough
Mary is no china doll statue, but a real woman given the most monumental task in history- to be the mother of Jesus. The Mother of God, the Mother of our redemption. Her example of joyful trust and endurance shows us how to hang on.
